Movements Measured

Movements Measured

The works exhibited are extracted from the series Spontaneous Structures/Structured Spontaneity, and presents the dichotomous relation between the two words “spontaneity” and “structure”. It’s a balance between action and intention. The constellations of the words will alter the meaning of the sentence completely, depending on its arrangement.

Spontaneous Structures refers to the action of creating structures spontaneously, and unintentional to some extend. This may be perceived as something uncontrolled, yet it happens to take some kind of form or meaning, i.e. meaning comes after creation.

Structured Spontaneity on the other hand, refers to an improvised action with the intention of achieving some level of control. This expression may appear spontaneous, although it has been constructed within a certain framework, i.e. meaning comes before creation.

The works in Movements Measured display a way of conceptualizing the relation between structure and spontaneity, with an emphasis on action and framework. The works are made with water, color and ink, which make the pieces very sensitive to movements and mistakes. The mixed styles from cutouts and free hand painting, brings another dichotomous relationship to the works, between repetition and uniqueness. Focusing on what happens when you replicate a structure, and what makes a work stand out from the other.

The intention of the show is to find a balance between what we want to control, and what we can actually control. The relationship between structure and spontaneity can be found anywhere around us. It expresses our way of thinking, of systematizing or improvising in our ways of being.
