It would have been very easy to create a scandalous, over-the-top, gruesome film around such a plot: the struggle of a transsexual single parent who makes ends meet by injecting botox substitute to other transsexuals, all of them knowing that the quest for their ideal of beauty is everything but without danger.

However, what is mesmerizing in the way Eduardo Roy Jr. deals with this slippery topic is how he evacuates the matter for most of its first half by depicting that community not from an outsider point of view, but instead sharing with the viewers the triviality of its daily lives, its humble joys and small tragedies. The beauty of the film lies in the tender and embracing light the director throws onto those whom society chooses best to ignore their mere existence.

By simply acknowledging the humanity of his characters, in all their shabby shortcomings and ephemeral magnificence, Eduardo Roy Jr. succeeds to produce a powerful, political and yet subtle film about the pursuit of one’s happiness.
